Ontario Active School Travel

Ontario Active School Travel (formerly Active & Safe Routes to School) is a program of Green Communities Canada. Our mission: to create a culture of active school travel – a world in which every day active transportation for Ontario students is safe, easy, and enjoyable.

For over two decades we have worked with a host of diverse partners and supporters – local, regional, provincial, and beyond – to reverse the decline in walking and wheeling on the school journey.

Today, we are involved in a tremendous variety of local, regional, and provincial projects, ranging from classroom-level activities like the iwalk-iwheel Club to provincial-level strategies, policies, and research.

In 2017, we received a major financial contribution from the Government of Ontario to take active school travel to the next level.

We are now enabled to provide greatly expanded support, including resources, training, coaching, campaigns, peer networking, and partnerships. Support is available to all related community initiatives across Ontario.

Ontario Active School Travel Fund

Thanks to financial contribution from the Government of Ontario, we have established a Fund to support active school travel initiatives in selected communities across the province.

The Fund supports projects that are expected to have a significant and lasting impact in their communities by establishing a foundation for continuing growth in active school travel.

The first round of funded projects was announced in May 2018. Visit Ontario Active School Travel Fund for more information.

School Travel Planning

We have everything you need to implement School Travel Planning in your community. The School Travel Planning Toolkit has has been revised and expanded in Spring 2018. Visit Making It Happen for information on School Travel Planning resources.
